The New Jewish Home, a large, diversified not-for-profit eldercare system in New York City, cares for approximately 12,000 people a year through its campuses in Manhattan and Westchester County, its senior living residences, and its large home health operation. In 2017 the organization will break ground on a new site for its Manhattan campus.

The new 376,000-square-foot facility, to be named The Living Center of Manhattan, is expected to open in 2020 and will be the first skilled nursing facilities in New York to be designed according to The Green House Project’s patient-directed model of long-term care as well as the first Green House residence in a major urban center.

Designed by Perkins Eastman, the $280 million, 20-story high-rise will have 414 beds. There will be 11 floors with two Green Houses (large apartments) on each and five floors for short-term (post-acute) rehab with a total of 150 beds.

An all-LGBTQ Green House home will offer a housing option to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender elders, although LGBTQ residents will be welcome in every house. And while The New Jewish Home serves New Yorkers of all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds, there will be two kosher homes for residents who wish to observe Jewish dietary laws.

The Living Center will have plenty of outdoor space, including 8,400 square feet of first-floor exterior gardens and a 4,000-square-foot rooftop with landscaped gardens; an urban farm; and areas for strolling, relaxation, and horticulture therapy. Indoor common areas will include the second-floor lounges, auditorium, bistro, coffee shop, library, and spa.

When choosing a site, The New Jewish Home looked for a vibrant residential neighborhood where older New Yorkers could live as they always have—within easy reach of services and amenities like shops, banks, movie theaters, places of worship, and parks (the new building is a block from Central Park). The Upper West Side location meets these needs.
