The Caledonian House is a state-of-the-art assisted living community designed to serve residents with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The community is located on The Scottish Home campus, a unique senior living community near Chicago that’s part of Illinois Saint Andrew Society, which was established in 1845 and is the first and oldest charity in Illinois.

The Scottish Home emphasizes a warm and loving community, close bonds between residents and staff, and strong connections to family and friends. The Caledonian House accommodates 20 residents in a personalized and home-like space that’s designed to improve each resident’s quality of life.

With influence from Scottish and Midwestern architecture, the two-story building houses 10  private bedrooms with full bathrooms on each floor. Additionally, each room opens onto a large lounge and an open-concept kitchen is at the center of each household.

While standard models of care employ three different workers for personal care, food service and cleaning, caregivers in the Caledonian House are trained to provide all three services to increase meaningful interaction between the resident and caregiver and to increase familiarity and trust, which encourages residents to remain engaged and feel fulfilled.

Before opening its doors, the Caledonian House won a 2016 British Consul General Award for innovation. The society’s mission is to provide service, fellowship, and celebration of Scottish culture and identity and is open to everyone who is Scottish, by heritage or inclination.
