Heron’s Key, located in the Harbor Hill neighborhood of Gig Harbor, Wash., is a Scandinavian Village design inspired continuing care retirement community that opened its doors to residents this fall.

The $145 million community features 184 independent living apartment homes and 10 cottage homes up to 1,800 square feet. StudioSIX5 (Austin, Texas) was the interior design firm on the project.

For architectural inspiration, the design team at Rice Fergus Miller looked at harborside villages in Scandinavia and Croatia. The historic forms of a harborside village are simple, rectilinear buildings with bold shapes and facades. For Heron’s Key and other similar modern structures, the design serves the purpose of simple economical construction and clean, peaceful beauty.

The architectural design concept incorporates components that would be found on a waterfront including repetitive roof features, bright colors, textures, and a variation of materials. Since buildings in small waterfront villages are not built at the same time, the materials used are dissimilar. In keeping with the village design, Heron’s Key incorporated multifaceted facades in a collection of smaller buildings, giving it a distinctive character.

The architecture and landscape are integrated, providing a variety of unique outdoor spaces connected by walkways throughout the property to promote an active pedestrian campus, connected to the greater community park and trail system.

The new independent living community features multiple restaurant-style dining venues, a fitness center, salon and barber shop, wellness programs, nature walking trials, and scheduled entertainment and events.

Penrose Harbor, the community’s on-site health center, offers 36 one-bedroom style assisted living apartments and features 45 private skilled nursing suites. The health center also provides short-term rehabilitative services seven days a week through physical, speech and occupational therapies.

Penrose Harbor has been specifically created with residential-style living, offering personalized services in a dignified setting. Each assisted living apartment is equipped with a private bath, microwave, and refrigerator. Penrose Harbor also offers residents access to secure outdoor spaces.
