Originally built in the 1990s, the Renaissance community (Tampa, Fla.), has been a fixture on the Gulf Coast for more than two decades. However, it was far from paradise, having not undergone any updates or renovations since it was initially built. In addition, the various level-of-care buildings were all constructed at different times, resulting in a community that lacked continuity in interior and exterior design influences. When the property was acquired by new ownership, it was apparent a major renovation was necessary to revitalize the community.

One of the most impactful facelifts in the community was the café in the Bayshore Building, which serves independent living residents.

Prior to the renovation, the entrance to the IL building felt confined and dark. As resident or guests entered the building, they encountered an enclosed reception, seldom-used library, and difficult-to-access café. The design team’s goal was to open up the space and create a lively, energetic gathering spot that evoked community and togetherness. As construction commenced, an unexpected total window replacement project, several structural improvements, and even an unanticipated mold remediation were discovered, adding to the overall design challenge.

Designers were able to combine the three rooms into one larger café that opens up into the reception area and a mailroom, creating a welcoming first impression. Residents are thrilled with the improvements, as the new café allows for expanded dining options, creating a more casual and fun experience, separate from the more formal dining area.

The café boasts several seating options, such as lounge, banquette, and table seating, increasing the overall functionality of the space. The design also creates an engaging environment and encourages seamless collaboration between residents, their families, and Renaissance staff members. Outside of dining, this makes it ideal for a variety of other educational or social activities.

Aesthetically, the café also received a fresh new look. The design team researched the market to identify design elements that would resonate and feel like home to current and prospective residents. From an original Victorian-styled décor, which felt tired and out of date, designers enhanced the palette with a “revitalized coastal” scheme inspired by Tampa’s white sand beaches, golden sunsets, and emerald-aqua waters, helping reflect the local Floridian atmosphere and brightening up the entire space.

Ultimately, the Renaissance renovation creates an upscale, modern feel and offers a continuum of care without expensive buy-ins.
