Arbor Terrace of Burnt Hickory opened last spring in Marietta, Ga. The 71,861-square-foot community houses assisted living and memory care units and features a design aesthetic that infuses excitement, durability, and choice into traditional areas of senior living design.

StudioSIX5 (Austin, Texas) utilized both traditional and modern elements for the interior design, using a combination of patterns, shapes, textures, and neutral palettes with pops of bright colors to create elegant, light, and airy spaces. For example, designers replaced the traditional wooden material of the reception desk and bar with geometric beveled panels, which have an inherently durable finish that can withstand damage from wheelchairs or walkers.

Designers also reimagined traditional areas such as the theater room, reception desk, bookshelves, and wardrobes to make them longer-lasting and useful for staff and residents alike. In the resident rooms, standard closets were replaced with built-in wardrobes that feature a lockable cabinet to store clothing, shoes, and accessories. Locking items in the cabinet encourages residents living with memory impairments to engage in other activities rather than staying busy by removing clothing from the wardrobes and helps to limit confusion and the need for caregivers to repeatedly tidy resident rooms.

In addition, there’s a built-in display that allows staff to lay out a couple of outfits so residents can select their clothing preference, reducing anxiety and stress from having too many choices.

Stylish and durable accent pieces, artwork, and materials complement the overall setting. The result is an approachable environment that’s fresh and stylish, yet serene and relaxing.
